  • Home Treatment Suggestions
  • Concerned about your symptoms

The flu and cold season has begun. The current symptom pictures we are seeing at the office are of two varieties.

The predominate symptom pictures are extreme sore throat and swollen glands, and some with congestion and cough.

The other picture has more nausea and sometimes diarrhea or vomiting or both. Body ache or headache can also be present.

Concerns that may bring you to the office are:

Remember there has not been person to person transfer of bird flu, so this is not an issue, contrary to what the news might have you thinking.

So far no one at our clinic has been positive for strep throat either. It seems to be a typical unpleasant virus making the rounds.

Concerns that may bring you to the office are:

    1. Pneumonia. With pneumonia there is usually a fever and the person feels very ill as opposed to just a cough that is annoying.

    2. Dehydration. This is most worrisome in children, but adults can feel very bad and have a headache if dehydrated. It can be dangerous especially if you have other health issues such as diabetes or hypertension.

    3. Being ill too long or not getting better each day after the first 2 or 3 days. This is certainly subjective, but not recovering as fast as you usually do can be cause for concern.

    Home Treatment Suggestions

I want to give some home treatment suggestions for those of you who do not feel it necessary to come into the office.

    1. Sore throat treatment option:

    a. Heating compress to the throat. (A second newsletter will follow on how to make a Heating Compress or just go to our website to see how. press

    b. Gargle then swallow 30 drops of Echinacea, Goldenseal combination type tincture or gargle then expectorate 10 drops of atomadine in an ounce of water every 2 hours for one day, then reduce to 3 times a day. c. Homeopathic Gripp-Heel every 1 or 2 hours

    2. For nausea or vomiting:

    a. Castor oil pack over the abdomen. b. Homeopathic combinations such as FluPlus by BHI which contains Ipecacuanha. c. If you can, swallow small sips of ginger and peppermint tea with honey.

.3. Coughs are often from post nasal drainage.

    a. Use a neti pot (see allergy newsletter for directions), or at least a saline nasal spray. b. Inspirol can be inhaled through the nose for congestion or through the mouth for coughs

    c. Even bronchitis will respond well to grapefruit tea. Wash and quarter an unpeeled grapefruit. Cover the grapefruit with water and simmer for 15 minutes. Toss the grapefruit and add lots of honey to the water, then sip frequently.

    Concerned about your symptoms

If you are concerned about your symptoms call for an urgent appointment. Call for an intravenous treatment with nutrients that give a big boost to the immune system if you want to get over illness faster.

The best treatment is prevention. See the previous newsletter on flu prevention and get started if you have not already begun.
